What are 'Power Surges' ?

A 'Power Surge' is when a sudden inrush of voltage back feeds into your home, Imagine a lightning strike hitting your local power line and a sudden spike of voltage coming into your home. Well, that happens on average  20-50 times per day. Truth is lightning is not the only cause of power surges, local businesses and industrial facilities are usually the biggest culprits of power surges.

 

Power Surges are a result of many factors. It starts with large resistive loads starting and stopping, anything that draws a significant amount of power. Could be a simple electric oven, or a concrete facility close to your home. Any large load connected close enough in the utility grid will send power surges into your home. All electronics are rated for a certain voltage, and when they are exposed to larger voltages it can damage the circuit board or cause degrading, meaning they will slowly wear out.

 

Most manufacturers will have a power surge section of their warranty as they do not cover failure due to a power surge, meaning if you do not have proof of surge protection the warranty is void. 

What are my options ?

The most common fix is a Surge Protection Outlet Bar on your TV or computer. Although this helps, these devices are made to protect against large spikes, but do not protect against the small in-rush spikes or other devices not connected to the power bar. Meaning things like your refrigerator, Microwave, washer/dryer etc.
